SPONGE BALLS ARE A HIT!

In a move designed to enhance skill development for young players, our short tennis tournaments now use large sponge balls instead of the traditional smaller ‘mini red’ balls. This change aims to help children develop a more complete stroke technique from an early age, enabling them to progress more quickly in the sport.
Our Head Coach and Sri Lankan professional player, Janali, explained the benefits of this approach:
“Using a sponge ball is much better for helping children develop a full shot, rather than a potentially stunted shot with a smaller red ball. By encouraging proper technique from the start, young players can transition more smoothly and quickly to full-court tennis.”
Sponge balls also provide additional advantages, such as a slower pace and higher bounce, giving children more time to react and refine their strokes. This helps them build confidence and consistency in their game without the limitations that can sometimes come with smaller, harder balls.
By focusing on correct stroke development from the outset, our tournaments continue to prioritise long-term player growth, ensuring young athletes are better prepared for the next stages of their tennis journey.
